nationally but across several swing states have shown romney gaining some traction and getting very close to overtaking the president in several key swing states and both nationally. now, the romney campaign did put out a memo earlier in the week throwing cold water on one ohio state poll they took issue with saying it wasn't properly calibrated but they are also at the same time touting a new "washington post" poll showing mitt romney leading the president nationally and doing very well among independents. at the same time we should p point out that along this tour he has hit a bit of a roadblock. one of his top surrogates, john sununu made some comments when he suggested that colin powell was endorsing the president because of his race. sununu put out a statement saying he believes powell endorsed the president because of his policies. it's not just the tough talk on the campaign trail that we're seeing that is causing things to get a little rocky out here. there is also the prospect of a major storm heading to the east coast. what forecasters have dubbed frankenstorm. it has already ca

in this state that is so important in the pick for president. here's the main reason right here. governor romney gets the republicans. the president gets the democrats but at the moment, in our survey, the president has a narrow lead among ohio voters who define themselves as independents. that is the battleground in a big battleground state, if you win the independents you are likely to win. governor romney close but the president with an important edge among independent voters. there's also an age divide, if you look at likely voters in ohio. among voters under the age of 50, there's a big gap, 18 point lead for the president among voters under the age of 50. a smaller lead for governor romney among voters 50 and older so the republicans are withstanding the attacks on the ryan budget, the medicare attacks, but governor romney would like that lead among older, more reliable, more republican voters to be a little bit bigger than 52-46. that's one thing he needs to work on. this is significant. like in michigan, the auto bailout plays big in ohio and look at this. you might say the president's o

, the eight or 10 or 12 states that are really crucial in this election. the romney campaign has about 300. so there's april quantitative difference, and there is some political science research showing that just having that field office, being on the ground in a certain community, does increase your share of the vote. but then there's a qualitative difference as well. the obama campaign, it's almost like a starbucks or a mcdonald's, a franchise operation, where every office is very much the same. it's all controlled by headquarters. they're all working off the same game plan, right down to every single office has what looks like this sort of nice grass-roots touch, a poster on the wall that says i support the president because -- and then everybody's handwritten in their reasons that they love obama underneath. every single office has that same poster. so it's very standardized, very controlled, very disciplined, and they're all working off the same plan. romney actually does not have his own ground game at all. it's the r.n.c., the republican national committee, that is operating the ground

that governor romney or paul ryan campaigning in this state. 15 events and all. so they are laying all their cards down in ohio. 18 electoral votes are very important. one of the things they're having to sort of overcome here is whether governor romney is of a supporter of union workers. and the job of the car industry in particular. obviously president obama signed that auto bailout package. a lot of folks in ohio and some surrounding states are very appreciative of that. they believe they still have a job today because of that bailout. governor romney, on the other hand, was in favor of a managed bankruptcy for g.m. and chrysler. and so he's got to somehow get voters to look past that, that he would be a supportive president of union workers in this state. as you mentioned, governor romney is down in florida today. we are expected after this bus tour to head down there as well. but right now the polls are looking in the president's favor. the latest cnn poll has the president up 50-46. there's still some work to be done here but we can tell you that the folks who are showing up for t
